Puerto Rican-born citizens living in the United States will now have to request a new copy of their birth certificates.

The country's Gov. Luis Fortuño signed a law making all old birth certificates processed prior to December 2009 not valid in any federal agency.

A transition period will be in effect until July 1. The new law is an effort to reduce all fraud cases reported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the past year.

According to the governmental agency, a Puerto Rican birth certificate runs for about $5,000 to $10,000 in the black market.

Puerto Ricans born in the island receive an American Social Security number and are eligible for a United States passport from birth.

In order to obtain an Ohio Driver License or Identification Card, applicants using a Puerto Rico birth certificate will need to provide additional documents to prove their identify.

A list of acceptable primary and secondary documents can be found at:

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities Student SHPE Chapter and the Twin Cities Professional SHPE Chapter are proud to host the SHPE Region 6 Regional Leadership Development Conference (RLDC) for 2010. The conference will be held at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus in Minneapolis, Minnesota April 22-25.

This conference will offer students the opportunity to learn what it takes to be real leaders, while at the same time working on group projects that will give them the experience they need to see what true Leadership entails.

The theme of this conference is 5-fold:

  • Shape the future
  • Make things happen
  • Engage today’s talent
  • Build the next generation
  • Invest in yourself

Students will learn about each of these themes of leadership in detail by participating in workshops delivered by industry-leading speakers. The workshop topics will scratch past the surface of typical leadership descriptions into a deeper understanding on how these themes represent good leadership. The students will have the opportunity to put into action the lessons they have learned at the RLDC into a group project. Students can expect to leave the conference with an action plan of how to implement the experiences and leadership knowledge gained to their home SHPE chapters after the RLDC.

CINCINNATI (March 1, 2010) –  On Monday, March 1st, the Academy of Multilingual Immersion Studies launched their first ever kick-off of a partnership with the Greater Cincinnati Nutrition Council and the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon.  The AMIS Young Readers’ group, which meets weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays, will be participating in the Cincinnati Flying Pig Kids’ Marathon, or Cochinito Volador

The Kids’ Marathon allows youngsters to finish the 26.2 miles of a marathon in incremental steps, a half mile or mile at a time during the school year. The final mile of the ‘course’ will be run on the actual Marathon course on Saturday, May 1, during Flying Pig Marathon weekend. Maria Lang, Program Facilitator at AMIS, is coordinating these efforts with help from Maya Shahani, the school nurse at AMIS.

During the school year, youngsters mark their distances on the Kids Marathon “Hog Log” which is available in the Kids Marathon section of the Flying Pig Marathon website, This year the “Hog Log” and Flying Pig Kids Marathon registration materials have been translated into Spanish for the first time, and AMIS will be the first school to pilo these Spanish language materials for the Kids’ Marathon.

To learn more about AMIS’ young readers and their first time participating in the “Cochinito Volador,” contact Maria Lang (513) 366-1804.  To learn more about healthy nutrition choices and to receive The Nutrition Council's e-news go to
