Education : LULAC's Young Readers Program and Tutoring @ AMIS (Jan. 30, 2008)
Posted by admin on 2008/1/30 10:20:00 (2462 reads)

Thanks to generous help from P&G , LULAC Cincinnati was proud to donate in 2007 $10,000 to start a "Young Readers Program" in AMIS (Academy of Multilingual Immersion Studies).

The Young Readers program is a  highly interactive and family oriented course designed to instill a love of reading in program participants, promote communication skills,  writing ability and comprehension levels and build self-esteem. Launched as a national initiative in 1986 to improve reading skills among first through third grade students, the Young Readers program is currently in twenty-seven sites in fifteen states.

For more info about the program click here...

The Young Readers Program is now in progress and the kids are excited to learn and improve English.

What not many people know,  there is a also a Tutoring Program for Hispanic chlidren, initiated by Sister Margarita Brewer, who is in charge of ESL (English as a Second Language) at Cincinnati Public Schools. Several  P&G Hispanic employees are also very involved in this program - Karla Sanchez, Juan Bonilla, his brother Alejandro Bonilla, and Juan's wife - Mireilly Rosado-Bonilla, come weekly to AMIS to tutor kids on different subjects.

Juan, a graduate of University of Puerto Rico in mechanical engineering, moved to Cincinati in 2004, and now is actively "giving back" by helping Latino kids in improving their grades and by being a role model for them. The wonderful work done by all of the tutors deserves a big "Thank you" from all of us!

I talked to Amy and Stephanie, two lovely fourth graders of Mexican descent. Both were born in USA, and while fluent in English, they enjoy the tutoring and have been participating in this program since 2006. Both would love to become doctors, and realize that only good education and good grades will enable them to realize their dreams.

If you would become a tutor, please click here for more information
