In partnership with the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, the Cincinnati chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs hosted on Thursday, April 20, a CONFERENCE KICK- OFF RECEPTION in anticipation of their 17th Annual Conference and Career Expo. The reception was sponsored by the Kroger Co.

NSHMBA works to prepare Hispanics for leadership positions throughout the U.S., so that they can provide the cultural awareness and sensitivity vital in the management of the nation’s diverse workforce.

On Thursday, April 20, Detroit chapter of NSHMBA hosted a Power Breakfast & Award Ceremony at the Plum Hollow Golf Club.

Keynote Speaker was David Mounts, CFO Domino’s Pizza, who talked about "A CFO’s Perspective on Leadership".

NSHMBA also honored two Hispanics for their outstanding leadership in the community:

Education : Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity Wins Diversity Program of the Year Award

Yesterday, April 18, at the Organization Awards organized by the Univesity of Dayton's Office of Student Involvement and Leadership, Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity. the oldest existing Latino Fraternity, was awarded the Diversity Program of the Year Award for the programming during Hispanic Heritage Month and the display case during Black History Month.

Meet Award-Winning Author, Francisco X. Alarcón

On April 28, at 4 PM, Alarcón, a Chicano poet and educator, will share his special insights on the importance of education and of maintaining one’s cultural heritage. He will also address the need to manage the educational barriers of the rapidly growing Latino population in the tri-state area.
Mr. Alarcón currently teaches at the University of California, Davis, where he directs the Spanish for Native Speakers program. He is the author of ten volumes of poetry. In April 2002 he received the Fred Cody Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bay Area Book Reviewers Association in San Francisco.

LULAC Cincinnati announced yesterday winners of its first ever scholarships. These two scholarships, funded by LaVERDAD Marketing and MidwestLatino, went to two students from NKU: Clara Manzano and Yuliana Perez.

The scholarship winners were announced on April 11, 2006, at NKU Student Awards & Recognition Celebration organized by NKU's African-American Student Affairs and Latino Student Affairs.

Education : NKU Hosts Student Awards & Recognition Celebration

On April 11th, Northern Kentucky University hosted a "Student Awards & Recognition Celebration", organized by African-American Student Affairs and Latino Student Affairs, and honoring students with GPA of 3.00 and above. The keynote speaker was Maria Molina from P&G.

The 2006 Latino Student Academic Achievement Awards recipients were: Baird R. Ullrey (College of Arts & Sciences), Sarah N. Palmer (College of Business), Stephanie Olguin-Hargett (College of Education & Human Services), Jesús Olivo Jr. (College of Informatics), Melissa M. Durkin (Chase College of Law), Inez E. Ortiz (School of Nursing & Health Professions).

NKU students (Jennifer Lamb, Liz Osborne, Maria Sleder, and Ashley Long) also presented recent field study project conducted in Mazamitla, Mexico.

2006 Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan Recognition Dinner

Congressman Sharrod Brown met on Saturday, April 8th, with Columbus' Latino community. He is a 2006 Ohio Democratic candidate for the United States Senate and wanted to hear from Latinos in Columbus about their issues. The conversation was facilitated by the Latino Leadership Initiative.

Events : La Fiesta Latina @ Cleveland, OH (Saturday, April 22)

The I-X Indoor Amusement Park, collaborating with Julia de Burgos, a non-profit cultural arts center, is hosting the second annual La Fiesta Latina, highlighting Hispanic heritage, April 22-23, 2006. La Fiesta Latina runs 1:00 PM – 9:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday, and includes a sampling of Latin music, dance, food, arts, and entertainment.

Luny Tunes & Mas Flow 2’s Baby Ranks, a nationally recognized reggaeton artist, performs Saturday April 22nd at 8:00 PM. Reggaeton combines the styles of techno, hip-hop and reggae to create a unique sound considered empowering with Spanish Caribbean youth. Live Bands and Dance troupes will highlight reggaeton and salsa, as well as Caribbean ballet, jazz and break dancing.

Butler County residents who need assistance have as of Monday, April 10, another helpful resource. The New Website:

www.butlercounty211.org

has a searchable database contaning information about 750 private and public organizations that offer housing, food, counseling, adult day care, furniture, job training and beyond. Visitors can browse the available donations and agency efforts as needed.

This service is brought by Butler 211, a division of Butler County Job and Family Services in cooperation with Butler County Information Services, a division of the Auditor's Office.

ArtNet, sponsored by CAA's Building Diverse Audiences Advisory Committee (BDAAC), in its second year, provides an opportunity for local artists to meet their peers and discover resources available to them in the community. A variety of schools, vendors, galleries, and art organizations come together to provide information to visual artists in a casual social setting at the Aronoff Center’s Weston Art Gallery. It will take place on Friday, April 21, 5:30-7:30 PM.

MidwestLatino would like to encouarge all Latino visual artists to attend. Admission is free, but registration is required.
