Events : Puerto Rican Cultural Society celebrates its 30th Anniversary
Posted by admin on 2008/4/8 13:30:00 (2127 reads)

dd

On Saturday, April 5th, the Dayton's Puerto Rican Cultural Society celebrated its 30th Anniversary.

In the year 1977, several Puerto Rican residents of the Dayton metropolitan area became quite concerned about the lack of knowledge about Puerto Rico throughout the Miami Valley region. For this reason, the Puerto Rican Cultural Society of Dayton was organized in March 1978 by Puerto Ricans residing in Dayton, Centerville, Fairborn, Huber Heights, Englewood, Beavercreek, Kettering, Bellbrook and other surrounding communities.  It was incorporated as a non-profit organization under the laws of the state of Ohio. In 1983, the Internal Revenue Service approved the tax-exempt t[501( c ) 3] status of the Society. As stated in its constitution, the objectives of the Society are to promote the heritage and culture of Puerto Rico and also to provide the people of the Dayton metropolitan area with information about Puerto Rico.  This information includes but is not limited to such topics as history, geography, culture, music, sports, economics, politics, education and heritage.

Over the 30 years of its existence, the Puerto Rican Cultural Society became the premier Latino organization in Dayton.

At this event they recognized several volunteers and supporters who helped to promote the culture of Puerto Rico throughout the Dayton community. Dolores Quinones and Wilma Blair received the 2007 Legacy Awards, City of Dayton Department of Recreation and Youth Services received the 2007 Community Supportens Award. And Premier Health Partners received the 2007 Business Sponsor Award.

There was also a great food, camaraderie, and entertainment by Son del Caribe.

Also present were Montgomery County Commissioners: Judy Dodge, and Dan Foley, who also was the Keynote Speaker.

Congratulations to Puerto Rican Cultural Society  on their 30th Anniversary, and on the very successful Gala Dinner.
