Community : Michael Beck joins Board of Directors of Int'l Center of Greater Cincinnati

We are happy to announce that MidwestLatino's founder, Michael Beck, joins Board of Directors of yet another International organization serving Greater Cincinnati. After being recently elected Vice President of Inter-Ethnic Council of Greater Cincinnati (read more...), he now joins Board of Directors of the International Center of Greater Cincinnati.

The International Center of Greater Cincinnati (ICGC) is a non-profit organization helping immigrants, refugees, and asylees in the Cincinnati area with problem-solving and access to social services when appropriate. The Center is open to everyone, regardless of their ethnic background, religion, or immigration status.

The Mission of the Int'l Center is:

* provide social services for new Americans and people with limited English proficiency
* provide educational opportunities for Greater Cincinnatians to learn about the world
* help people new to the area to learn about Greater Cincinnati and the USA

Community : Hispanic Scholarship Fund Dinner (Sept. 23, 2006)

The Fifth Annual Greater Cincinnati Hispanic Scholarship Fund Gala was held Saturday, September 23 to celebrate local Hispanic advancement through education. The celebration marks the fifth year of the event and its unprecedented accomplishment of approaching $1 million in scholarships for local Hispanic students in that short period of time.

Meet Sonia Nazario, author of "Enrique’s Journey", Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing. "Enrique’s Journey" is the true story of a migrant boy from Honduras searching for his mother in America.

Sonia Nazario is an award-winning journalist for the Los Angeles Times who covers Latinos in America and immigration issues, particularly the “humanitarian” issues surrounding the desperate journey young children make to enter the U.S. in order to search for their mothers. HBO is planning a future mini-series based on “Enrique’s Journey.”

"Fueling the innovative spirit of Latinos at P&G" - under this motto P&G had full day session providing a forum to discuss the importance and uniqueness of Latinos to the P&G Community, both as employees and as consumers, and their value in driving P&G's businesses. Also, to develop cross-cultural competencies that will enable young Latino employees to maximize their contribution and accelerate their success.

The P&G Auditorium was packed - a clear sign that Latinos are a growing force within P&G and that Latinnovation was an important topic to them.

We are happy to announce that MidwestLatino's founder, Michael Beck, has been elected Vice President of Inter-Ethnic Council of Greater Cincinnati.

The Inter-Ethnic Council of Greater Cincinnati (IECGC) is an independent, non-profit organization supported by members from various ethnic groups. The IECGC, known also as the "Greater Cincinnati's Cultural United Nations", exists to promote multi-cultural awareness, understanding, respect and harmony among different ethnic and nationality groups in Greater Cincinnati. It was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1992.

Community : Picnic with Dick DeVos, candidate for Michigan Governor

On Sunday, September 17th, 2006, MidwestLatino was invited to a picnic organized by Michigan's Hispanic Coalition for DeVos. Dick DeVos is running for the Governor of Michigan and is reaching out to the Hispanic/Latino community. The picnic was an opportunity for him to meet with Michigan Hispanics, answer their questions, and seek their feedback.

The entertainment was provided by Detroit's best Salsa band - Orquesta Sensacional, giving Dick DeVos a chance to practice his Salsa dancing skills.

The After-Party of the Indinapolis Fiesta was @ ICE with DJ TaZ, the best Salsa DJ in Indianapolis. As a special feature, MidwestLatino was proud to co-sponsor the Reggaeton sensation "Final 4our" from Detroit.

Events : Indianapolis Fiesta 2006

As last year, the Indianapolis Fiesta was a lot of fun! With great local bands such as Ipanema, Mantra, and Salsa & Company, and guest star Orquesta Iluziones, the festival visitors stayed till the very end dancing and having fun.

But the night was not over, as most of them headed to ICE for a Latino party with DJ TaZ and Reggaeton sensation "Final 4our" from Detroit and co-sponsored by MidwestLatino.

Education : Award-Winning Journalist Highlights UC’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations

Havana-born novelist and journalist Achy Obejas is the highlighted speaker and the UC Bookstore-featured writer for the University of Cincinnati’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations running from Sept. 15-Oct. 14. Obejas will read selections from her novels beginning at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 4, in the MainStreet Cinema of Tangeman University Center (TUC), followed by an 11 a.m. book signing in the UC Bookstore.

Obejas will also meet with the dozens of students in UC’s Center for Access and Transition (CAT) who are reading some of Obejas books during fall quarter in preparatory reading and writing courses and English Composition. The afternoon reading and book signing takes place at 3 p.m., Oct. 4, in the CAT Reading Room (Room 4604) of French Hall.

Obejas is author of the critically acclaimed Days of Awe and continues to work as a freelance journalist for the Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune, where she worked for a decade and received a Pulitzer Prize for a Tribune team investigation. She is also the recipient of the Studs Terkel Journalism Prize, several Peter Lisagor journalism honors, two Lambda Literary awards, a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in poetry, and residencies at Yaddo, Ragdale and the Virginia Center for the Arts, among other honors.

Her fiction and poetry has been translated into Spanish, German, Hungarian and Farsi, and she has lectured and held readings across the U.S. as well as in Cuba, Mexico, Spain and Australia.

Education : NSHMBA Latino High School Student Workshop @ NKU (Sept. 16)

The National Society of Hispanic MBA’s (NSHMBA) and NKU’s Office of Latino Student Affairs were hosting a Latino High School Student Workshop on September 16th, 2006. This one-day workshop introduced Latino high school students to the NSHMBA organization and offered them very useful and interesting information regarding strategies for success in college and the workplace.

As an extra benefit, the students who attended the workshop, have been invited to attend the 17TH ANNUAL NSHMBA CONFERENCE AND CAREER EXPO ON OCTOBER 26TH-28TH at the Duke Energy Convention Center at no cost.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Hector Tobar will be visiting the Hamilton Campus on September 21st.

ALAS, The Association of Latino and American Students, invites you to join for our featured event of the Fall semester: "Latino Americans: Reinventing the American Immigrant Experience, Redefining the American Community" with Hector Tobar.

Mr. Tobar is the Mexico City Bureau Chief for the Los Angeles Times and shares the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for the Times coverage of the L.A. Riots. He is the author of Translation Nation: Defining a New American Identity in the Spanish-Speaking United States and The Tattooed Soldier. Mr. Tobar is the son of Guatemalan immigrants and grew up in Southern California. He has an MFA from the University of California at Irvine.

There will be a book signing and refreshments immediately following Mr. Tobar's lecture.

Date/Time: Thursday, September 21, 2006 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Approximate duration of 2 hour(s).
