Diego Rivera (1886-1957), is considered one of the greatest artists in the 20th Century. Born in Guanajuato Mexico, in 1892 he moved to Mexico City with his family and later studied in the San Carlos Academy and in the carving workshop of artist José Guadalupe Posada, whose influence is seen in Rivera’s works. He also spent more than 14 years in Europe, much of it in Paris studying the works of classic masters such as Cezanne and Matisse.
His work focuses on Mexican history, providing insight into the political and social aspects of Mexican culture. Much of his work was done on murals and large canvases since part of his goal was to make art more public and to foster discussion about the social content. He is credited with the reintroduction of fresco painting into modern art and architecture, mainly as a way to share his social commentary with a wide audience.
A lifelong Marxist, Rivera used his art to address the effects of progress, especially technology and industrial science, on human relationships. Many of his paintings emphasize the working class and their ongoing struggle for respect and advancement.
