Community : Leo Calderon receives LULAC Community Award (August 22)

The Cincinnati local chapter of League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization focused on education, civil rights, and employment for Latinos/Hispanics, honored at its 1st Annual LULAC Community Awards Dinner on August 22, 2006, Mr. Leo Calderon, Director of Latino Student Affairs at Northern Kentucky University (NKU).

Originally from Mexico, Mr. Calderon has been a pillar of the Latino Community in the Tri-State. He serves or has served on many boards including the Community Advisory Council of the National Underground Freedom Center; the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) The Voice Advisory Board; Centro de Amistad Board (where he was instrumental in establishing the Toyota/Centro de Amistad Scholarship); Red Cross Board of Directors; Brighton Center Board, HealthPoint, and Su Casa Hispanic Center Board of Directors. He also co-founded Educating Latinos for Kentucky’s Future, where he serves as Vice President, and the Tri-State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

The Awards Dinner, sponsored by US Bank, LAVERDAD Marketing and MidwestLatino, also honored the first two Greater Cincinnati LULAC scholarship recipients: Clara Manzano from NKU and Yuliana Perez from the University of Cincinnati.

Dr. Gerry St. Amand, Vice-President of University Advancement, NKU, made the opening remarks.
