SCREENWRITER TO SPEAK AT XAVIER UNIVERSITY ABOUT HIS LIFE DURING

EL SALVADOR’S CIVIL WAR

Movie “Voces Inocentes” is based on Oscar Torres’ life

Oscar Torres, screenwriter of the movie “Voces Inocentes (Innocent Voices)”, will speak at Xavier University on Wednesday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m. in Kelley Auditorium located in Alter Hall on the University campus.  There will be a viewing of the film followed by a lecture by Torres and a question and answer session. This event is free and open to the public.

“Voces Inocentes” portrays the writer’s life during the civil war in El Salvador in the 1980’s and the issues surrounding children soldiers. It recounts the story of a young boy who has a 12th birthday coming up. At age 12, he is eligible to be a child solider. The boy and his mother fight to keep him out of the war.

“When I first saw the movie “Voces Inocentes” in El Salvador during my academic service learning semester, I was very moved by the story of the country’s civil war told through the perspective of a child,” says Kari Huske, the chair of the event. “Although the subject of children being recruited into armies is not a serious threat in the United States, currently around 300,000 children are being recruited to fight in conflicts around the world.  We are bringing this event to campus to build awareness about these issues and the testimony by Oscar Torres will add a personal face to the struggle that many children are facing globally,”

The Student Activities Council, Lecture Series, Voices of Solidarity and the Intercultural Programming Funding Board are sponsoring this event.

As a Catholic, Jesuit University Xavier University is dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and to the orderly discussion of issues confronting society.
