Events : Five Hispanic Boxers to Compete in Semifinal Action at the Midwestern Trials

Five Hispanic boxers from five different states will take the ring on Friday night, April 6th,  at the 2007 Midwestern Trials in Cincinnati, Ohio.
 
2005 National Champion Marco Rangel (Scottsdale, Ariz.) will open competition in a flyweight bout with Robert Bell, Jr. (Pontiac, Mich.) in the first bout of the evening session. Rangel is moving up to the flyweight division from his former light flyweight class.

 

 

A bantamweight match-up between Victor Valenzuela (Passaic, N.J.) and Juan Pablo Vargas (Chicago, Ill.) will follow in the second bout of the evening session. Lightweight Miguel Gonzalez (Cleveland, Ohio) will compete for a spot in championship action in the fourth bout of the session when he faces off with Tony Walker (Cincinnati, Ohio). Middleweight Fernando Guerrero (Salisbury, Md.) will be the final Hispanic competitor taking the ring in the seventh bout of Friday’s semifinal action. He will battle Paul Littleton (Urbana, Ill.) for a berth in the final round.

Featherweight Luis Ramos, Jr. (Santa Ana, Calif.) won a berth in final round action with a semifinal stoppage of Micah Branch (Columbus, Ohio) on Friday afternoon. Ramos will face off with Jesse Carradine (Cincinnati, Ohio) on Saturday night. Welterweight Ray Rivera, Jr. (Kansas City, Mo.) advanced to championship night as well with a 28-19 victory over Nathan Valenzuela (Chicago, Ill.) in semifinal competition. 

Semifinal action will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Cincinnati Grand Ballroom.

 

Championship round action will be contested on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

The winners of the 2007 Midwestern Trials will advance to the 2007 U.S. Championships, the lone direct qualifier for the Olympic Team Trials – Boxing. The 2007 Midwestern Trials is the first-ever edition of the event and showcases future Olympians and World Champions.
