The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra presents the CSO Backstage Workshop Series, a new educational initiative, to expose students to and foster interest in career opportunities in classical music. “

The four-workshop series is designed for students grades 7-12 and their parents and is hosted by the CSO free of charge. Each workshop is held at Music Hall on a Saturday and culminates with complimentary tickets to a CSO concert. “Parents are a key part of the equation,” said Cushing-Reid. “We have found that if parents have an understanding of what is involved, what resources are available and are part of the process, it has a tremendous impact.”

One of the goals of CSO Backstage workshops is to recruit more African-American and Latino students to ensure that all local students have access to learning more about career options in the classical music world.

“We want to open doors and create opportunities,” said Kathy Jorgensen-Finley, CSO manager for diversity and community engagement. “Music is a universal language and we want to expose career options in classical music to everyone. The workshop setting lends itself to dialogue and a real one-on-one chance to get more information.”

The next session is on Saturday, January 27, 5 p.m.

LULAC National Policy Newsletter 01/18/07

EDUCATION

LULAC urges congress to help students achieve the American dream by passing the college student relief act

Student loans would be cut in half

The League of United Latin American Citizens, endorses H.R. 5, the College Student Relief Act in order to reduce the undue burden of debt being placed on middle class students and families.

“LULAC supports this critical piece of legislation that would cut interest rates on Subsidized Stafford Loans in half from 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent over a five-year period,” said LULAC National President Rosa Rosales. “We need to provide immediate relief to middle class families by reducing interest rates. This would help an estimated 5.5 million students get need-based federal loans. ” (Read More)

130 East Fifth Street, Dayton, OH 45402, Office Phone: (937) 222-8452 • For Showtimes: (937) 222-7469(SHOW)

On Friday, Jan 12th, the Neon Theater in Dayton, OH is excited to begin run of the new, amazing film from Pedro Almodovar - VOLVER - with a beautifully amazing performance by Penelope Cruz and the return of Almodovarian favorite Carmen Maura (she and Almodovar haven't collaborated since WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN in the late 80's).

Synopsis for VOLVER: “The tempestuous winds in La Mancha are said to make its denizens insane; they are also alleged to have caused the wildfires that, years ago, orphaned Raimunda (Pénelope Cruz) and Sole (Lola Dueñas). Raimunda now lives a workaday life in Madrid but her routine is about to be seriously destabilized. Around the same time that she finds herself in a crisis involving her daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo) and her deadbeat husband, Raimunda’s long-dead mother, Irene (Carmen Maura), begins making appearances in their hometown to sort out the situations she couldn’t resolve while living.” (taken from www.tribute.ca) Visit VOLVER's official website at http://www.sonyclassics.com/volver/main.html

A vibrant mix of dramatic techniques comes to the University of Dayton 8 PM Saturday, Feb. 3rd, in the Ball Theatre in Kennedy Union as the Arm-of-the-Sea Theater offers a multimedia production of La Cosecha/The Harvest

In La Cosecha, Cesar is a young man looking for work. But when he can't pay the coyote who has smuggled him across the border, he becomes caught in a web of modern-day slavery. This bilingual drama features haunting mask and puppet characters and live music by Dean Jones and Juan Basilio Sanchez. It's extraordinary theatre: puppetry and masks produce dramatic visual effects, all in the service of social justice. La Cosecha (The Harvest) will be performed in Spanish and English.

Tickets are only $5. Call the UD Box Office at 937-229-2545 to reserve your tickets.
