4th Annual Greater Cincinnati Hispanic Scholarship Fund Gala

Local educators, corporations, and community leaders have partnered with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to present the Fourth Annual Greater Cincinnati Hispanic Scholarship Fund Gala this past Saturday, September 24th at 6:30 PM, at Northern Kentucky Convention Center.

In an effort to increase awareness of the Hispanic culture and community within its workforce, MetLife is celebrating the Hispanic Heritage Month by organizing four Authentic Hispanic Dinners for its employees.

MetLife employees were invited to register and then each time randomly selected 15 of them join for a delicious dinner served by a local Latino restaurant. An invited Hispanic guest speaker shares his/her experiences and knowledge about Hispanic culture, thus contributing to expanding cultural awareness of the participants.

This week's guest speaker, Amelia Rodriguez from VocaLink, shared her experiences as a Hispanic businesswoman building her dream company in the US.

The U.S. Postal Service unveiled the new Let's Dance: Bailemos! Stamps as part of National Hispanic Heritage Month events Saturday, Sept. 17 in New York and Miami. The day started off in Miami at the Coconut Grove Convention Center and concluded at the Copacabana in New York that evening.

There is a vibrant beauty emanating from the four Let's Dance: Bailemos stamps that celebrate the Merengue, the Mambo, the Cha-Cha-Cha and the Salsa.

NKU is having a KICK-Off Celebration to mark this year's National Hispanic Heritage Month at Northern Kentucky University. It will take place this coming Friday, September 16 at 3:00 P.M. in the University Center, second floor lobby area. There will be light refreshments, folkloric dancing and live music.

"Su Casa Hispanic Festival" is over! It was a weekend full of great Latino music, food, & dancing.

But it was also a weekend of remembering victims of hurricane Katrina. The Latino community showed once again how giving and caring it is: the festival visitors donated the incredible amount of $1,848.25!!! Our big "THANK YOU" goes to all these generous people who helped to make it happen!!!

Cincinnati, September 2, 2005

V. Anthony Simms, the Vice-Chairman of the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs, together with MidwestLatino, The Spanish Journal, and the Cincinnati chapter of LULAC, is forming a committee to help with fundraising efforts within the Latino Community of Tri-State to support victims of Hurricane Katrina.


"In the time of a national crisis like this we have to unite as a community and help the victims of this terrible disaster. The images we see on TV are heartbreaking, and we can't just sit back and ignore it. The Hispanic/Latino people have been always very caring and giving, and this time it's not different. The people in the disaster area are suffering, they are losing hope, and we have to help them. We would like to invite all Latino organizations and companies in the Tri-State to join us in this effort" said Mr. Simms.

As a first company responding to this call was "Havana Martini Club" which will use this Saturday's Latin night to raise funds for the victims. There will be also a voluntary donation and 100% of all monies collected will go to hurricane relief.



Also on Saturday, Rudy Alvarez will collect donations at Corinthian

The next will be a benefit concert of Spanish Rock group "Mantra" from Indianapolis which will be performing in La Tradicion on Saturday, September 10th.

This newly formed committee will continue with organizing and sponsoring more benefit events, and we certainly hope that all other Latino venues, companies, and organizations will join this effort. This is a time to get united so we can make the difference the victims of the disaster deserve from us!

Anthony Muñoz, the legendary Hispanic football star of Cincinnati Bengals, is one of the sponsors behind the ProScan Pink Ribbon Women's Center.

The Center will provide free breast cancer screening to women who don't have insurance and can't afford to pay out-of-pocket. It will open in the fall, about six weeks after a Sept. 1 ribbon-cutting, at Crossroad Health Center, 5 E. Liberty St. It will be funded by the Cris Collinsworth ProScan Foundation, the Anthony Muñoz Foundation and the Marvin Lewis Community Fund.

This Sunday, August 28th, we had for the first time ever, a candidate for Cincinnati Mayor talking directly to Latino/Hispanic voters using Hispanic media, and explaining to potential voters why they should vote for her.

Alicia Reece, Cincinnati's current Vice Mayor, and a candidate for Mayor position, was interviewed live on "Radio en Español", where she talked about her life and career, and about her future plans for Cincinnati.

This interview shows the growing importance of Latinos/Hispanics in Cincinnati's elections, as well as the increasingly influential role played by the Hispanic media, such as "The Spanish Journal" or "Radio en Español", as "the" communication channel to reach the Latino community.

While collaborating on the upcoming "Cincinnati International Fiesta", Michael Beck from MidwestLatino and Tony Simms from OCHLA (Ohio Commission of Hispanic/Latino Affairs) met with the Board of the Greater Cincinnati Chinese Chamber of Commerce to discuss issues facing international community in Cincinnati. One of the recent reasons for discomfort within the Chinese community is a wave of armed robberies targeting Asian restaurant workers (see a WCPO article: http://www.wcpo.com/news/2005/local/07/29/asian.html).

It has been agreed to work together on making the public and state/city officials aware of such issues in order to stop this kind of attacks on Asian or any other immigrants.

A native of Panama, she brings a very strong community orientation to our Board, especially in the Education area. We are very honored to have her as our Advisor.
