The Puerto Rican Cultural Society of Dayton in association with Victoria Theatre Association presented an evening with Conjunto Criollo on Sunday, Oct 15th. The event was a part of Hispanic Heritage Month. Conjunto Criollo is one of Puerto Rico’s most traditional music groups whose origin emerged in the mountains of Puerto Rico. The group is a musical ensemble of 12-15 members who began performing in 2004 at the University of Puerto Rico. The group’s originator is Professor Orlando Laureano.

It was an evening of beautiful ballads such as "Mi Patria Querida", classics such as "Viejo San Juan", and their signature songs from the mountains of Puerto Rico. Professor Orlando Laureano also shared with us the background of many of the songs, and explained the instruments used, e.g. Tiple.

Events : Cincinnati rallies behind NSHMBA conference 2006
Posted by admin on 2006/10/3 17:40:00 (2653 reads)

CINCINNATI, OH, Oct. 3, 2006 - A host of world class companies and organizations headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio are collaborating to raise the bar for this year’s 17th Annual Conference and Career Expo of NSHMBA (National Society of Hispanic MBAs). Dubbed “CinciPlaza (www.cinciplaza.com),” the local NSHMBA Chapter organized the collaboration as a way to add value for local chapter sponsors, and as a way for the Greater Cincinnati Region to get behind the conference and welcome NSHMBA to Cincinnati.

The Greater Cincinnati Region is home to 10 Fortune 500 firms, 17 Fortune 1000 firms and more than 300 foreign-owned firms, providing a vibrant foundation for thriving careers and an exceptional quality of life.

The Cincinnati NSHMBA chapter is taking this opportunity quite seriously. They even established a special position on the local Board of Directors to help get the most out of the opportunity.

“In order to attract top talent and prevent a “brain drain” of our regional talent, we formed CinciPlaza in a way that not only showcases our great companies, but demonstrates that Cincinnati is indeed a great place to grow, work, and thrive,” said Mike Robinson, CEO of Cincinnati-based LaVERDAD Marketing & Media, and special board member appointed to develop and lead the initiative.

CinciPlaza participating companies will be physically co-locating at the conference, and also co-marketing via web sites, around Cincinnati during the event, and via our community partners such as the Freedom Center, Downtown Cincinnati Inc, the world famous Cincinnati Zoo, along with the Regional and Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, and the Fine Arts Fund organizations.

"The Fine Arts Fund congratulates NSHMBA for its outstanding work in promoting Hispanic professionals,” said Mary McCullough Hudson, president and CEO of the Fine Arts Fund. “We share NSHMBA’s commitment to enrich our community by advancing the broad and diverse array of diversity and arts offerings in the Greater Cincinnati area."

The involvement of local participants breaks new ground on many fronts, including that of local nonprofits and city organizations.

David Ginsburg, president and CEO, of Downtown Cincinnati Inc. said "Downtown Cincinnati is thrilled to host the more than 7,000 NSHMBA conference attendees this October 26-28. DCI's downtown ambassadors will be on hand to offer assistance during their stay. We hope the NSHMBA attendees and their families find our city vibrant and welcoming and moreover, find a career choice that brings them back as a CincinnatiUSA resident!"

Also joining CinciPlaza are local universities which include University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, Northern Kentucky University, and Miami University of Oxford, Ohio.

From the corporate side, CinciPlaza includes Procter & Gamble, this year’s lead sponsor for the conference, along with a who’s-who of US corporations including The Kroger Company, Cintas, Western Southern, Macy’s, Duke Energy, GE Aviation, Chiquita, and Fifth Third Bancorp.

“P&G is honored to be the Lead Sponsor of the 17th NSHMBA Annual Conference and Career Fair. Understanding, serving and reflecting the Hispanic community is important to P&G. We hire top Hispanic talent and maintain successful partnerships with organizations devoted to supporting the Hispanic community such as NSHMBA. On behalf of P&G, I welcome the more than 7000 members of NSHMBA to Greater Cincinnati!” said A.G. Lafley, chairman and CEO, P&G.

All these companies joined CinciPlaza to advocate for Cincinnati. George A. Schaefer, Jr., chairman and CEO, Fifth Third Bancorp, said it best: "Fifth Third Bank has always supported the promotion of Cincinnati as a great place to live, to work and to do business. That's why we enthusiastically support CinciPlaza. We believe that by joining with other great Cincinnati companies in this endeavor, we can attract top talent to keep our company and the city thriving”

Collectively, these partners represent over $175 billion in revenues, and some of the most prestigious nonprofit, arts and humanities organizations in the nation.

"The NSHMBA conference is an excellent opportunity to recruit exceptional Hispanic talent, something that's keenly important to Chiquita, because more than 17,000 of our 25,000 employees worldwide live and work in Latin America,” said Chiquita Brands International Chairman & CEO, Fernando Aguirre. “In addition, hosting the conference in Cincinnati gives the partners from CinciPlaza, which include some of the most respected companies in the nation, a great showcase to demonstrate the wonderful quality of life that the Tri-State has to offer."

Events : NSHMBA Volunteers Needed!
Posted by admin on 2006/10/3 17:20:00 (1288 reads)

Dear Cincinnati Member,

NSHMBA needs your help! We have an urgent need for volunteers to help with set-up for the 17th Annual Conference and Career Expo on Sunday, October 22nd through Tuesday, October 24th. Since these opportunities take place so far before the conference, we are in need of local residents. Please consider volunteering a few hours of your time to ensure that this year's conference will run seamlessly.

Volunteering is not just helpful to NSHMBA; it also has substantial benefits for the volunteer. If you were considering skipping this year's conference for financial reasons, consider volunteering instead. For just 3 hours of volunteering, you can gain free access to the full professional development day and networking events on Thursday, and for just six hours, you can also gain access to the Career Expo on Friday and Saturday.

This benefit is not just available for members or Hispanics. Anyone aged 21 or older can volunteer and gain complimentary access to conference events. That being said, feel free to market this opportunity to your colleagues and acquaintances. Attending the conference is a worthwhile investment for business professionals and students in all stages of their careers.

At this time we are only in need of pre-conference volunteers. For more information about volunteering and to sign up, please visit the Volunteer website.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Sincerely,

Esther Gonzalez Smith
Chapter Development Manager / Volunteer Coordinator
