Frequently Asked Questions regarding The 1st Annual Salsathon for A Cause
WHEN IS THE EVENT? Tomorrow night aka Saturday January 22, 2011 7PM
WHERE EXACTLY IS THE CINCINNATI BALLET? The Cincinnati Ballet is located near the intersection of Liberty and Central Parkway in Over the Rhine near Downtown. It's half a block away from Music Hall and Findlay Market. The exact address for getting directions is 1515 Central Parkway Cincinnati, OH 45214. You can also check out the Cincinnati Ballet's locations page for more info: http://www.cballet.org/academy/locations#downtown
THE EVENT IS IN OVER THE RHINE. WHAT ABOUT PARKING? IS MY VEHICLE SAFE THERE? There is an elevated parking lot next to the Ballet where you can park. There are also parking spaces along Central Parkway. In terms of security, there will be security officers monitoring the parking lot the entire time of the event.
IS THERE A DRESS CODE? Wear what you like. However, be aware that there will be photos taken of the event. Whatever you choose make sure you're comfortable. You're going to be dancing for a long time. And it may be a good thought to bring an additional shirt or two.
WHAT ABOUT SHOES? The ballet floor is a marley floor, not a hardwood floor. Its designed to absorb the shock from the jumps that ballet dancers do, so it is quite delicate. In order to protect the floor and your feet, please wear smooth or soft soled shoes. And unfortunately, ladies, absolutely NO HEELS! They will destroy the floor!
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? THIS IS ALL FOR CHARITY, RIGHT? The money that you're paying to be a spectator or a dancer goes directly to Faces Without Places. Wanna know more about what they do http://www.faceswithoutplaces.org/
Remember registering in advance is $15.00 per person or $20.00 at the door for dancers. Spectators $10.00 Cash or Check only. Visit http://salsaires.com/ for more information and where to register. Online registration is available until 12PM Saturday afternoon.
I CAN'T ATTEND THE EVENT, BUT I WOULD STILL LIKE TO SUPPORT THE CAUSE. HOW DO I DO THAT? First and foremost spread the word to friends and family about the good work that Faces Without Places is doing for homeless children. If you want to make a monetary donation, here's the link http://www.faceswithoutplaces.org/mai ... D=36&thesubdeptID=168
WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE FOR THE EVENING? 6:30 - Doors open to the public 7:00 - Intro lesson of Salsa, Merengue, Bachata 7:55 - Welcome and Introductions 8:05 - Rueda and Afro-Cuban Demonstration 8:15 - Salsathon Instructions 8:30 - 11:30 Salsathon!!!!!!!
DO I ACTUALLY HAVE TO DANCE 3 CONSECUTIVE HOURS? We'd love if you do, but its your right to choose when you want to stop dancing. You do get two 10 minute breaks during the three hour session to rest up. The goal is to have fun with your friends during the event. If you plan on trying to last all three hours, choose wisely when to exert yourself to the music and when to just go...... sloooooow. Make sure to eat light and avoid the alcohol until after the event is over.
CAN I PARTICIPATE WITHOUT A PREARRANGED PARTNER? Yes, of course! We encouraged people to bring partners so there would be a good balance of men and women in the room. We will attempt to match everyone up with a partner but there are no guarantees. People will be rotating between partners for most of the evening so there will be plenty of opportunities to dance. If at any time you're on the floor not dancing with someone, please do shines or basic footwork on your own before you rotate to another dancer.
THIS IS A COMPETITION, RIGHT? The competitive element with a partner is during the last half hour. And this is where you will dance with the person you were partnered up with at the time of registration. The songs will move at a faster tempo and those couples that are there at the end will be judged on how well they move and the enthusiasm they bring to the dance at that time. There will be prizes for the top three couples at the end. That's why it's ideal to dance with someone you know and are comfortable dancing with. Another reason why we encouraged bringing a partner to the event.
WHAT BEVERAGES WILL BE AVAILABLE? The only spirit we have is water on the rocks!
Salsaires and Faces Without Places thank you SO MUCH in advance for your participation, and for your assistance to the cause. We are sure you will have a wonderful time, and look forward to making this an annual event.

Our friend, Doreen Beatrice from Step-N-Out Dance Studio in Covington, is organizing on January 15th, a new event called Riverfront DanceSport Festival.
As she states on the event's Website:
I have organized a popular dance event called the Winter Gala. It took place in mid- January, always in the Greater Covington/Cincinnati area and included professional and amateur dancers from Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. The day was driven by the Tri-State Dance Professionals. It was designed to emphasize learning with a lecture series combined with showcasing professional and amateur dancers in a theatrical show. We rounded out the evening with a formal social dinner/ dance. As the event in 2010 was a success, I had a vision of expanding it to have a more competitive edge. As I approached my two new organizing partners, Bill Sparks and Gert Roslender with the idea, they were on board without a second thought. Interestingly enough, Gert resides in Indiana, Bill in Ohio and I live in Kentucky. We truly represent the Tri-State Region. We still want to hold true to the original theme by creating part of the event to focus on educational dance seminars, dance exhibitions and a dinner/dance but intend to add competition to the mix. Please continue to follow the creation of our event and website over the next few months. We look forward to seeing you next year at the Riverfront DanceSport Festival.
The first ever Networking Meeting of the SHPE Cincinnati Chapter was a total success. The band had also participated in multiple festivals and charitable events whre the band had the oportunity to work with numerous professional artists and members of the entertainment media.
