On Monday, Nov. 26th, Mad Frog, Tropicosoand MidwestLatinowill be hosting a Fundraiser for victims of the floods in Mexico.
The floods, in Tabasco and Chiapas states of southern Mexico, have destroyed or damaged the homes of as many as half a million people (read here...).
Please come and support this effort to help!!!
As always, Tropicoso will be playing the best Salsa in Cincinnati!!!
And as each Monday, Mad Frog has its basement open - with the best in Reggaeton and Hip-hop. It's like having two clubs in one: live Salsa/Merenge upstairs with Tropicoso, and Reggaeton and Hip-hop downstairs!

On Saturday, Nov. 24th, family and friends of Carmen and Chris Velez, respectively the lead singer and percussionist of local Salsa band - Tropicoso, celebrated the Baptism of their son - Giovanni Manuel Velez, which took place at the Su Casa church. The Godmother and Godfather were Maria and Miguel Maldonado, respectively the lead singer and percussionist of Latin Xposure, Cincinnati's first Salsa band. And the second Godmother was Gina Stough, lead singer of yet another local Salsa band - Son del Caribe.
Well, with such parents and Godparents, it seems like Giovanni will have no choice but to become a famous Latino musician!!!!

On Saturday, Nov. 3rd, 2007, the Humanitarian League which is "Teaching Kindess and Compassion to Northern Kentucky", hosted its first black tie "Humanitarian of the Year" Gala at the Drees Pavilion.
The evening included cocktails and dinner, a "roast and toast" honoring the Humanitarian of the Year (former Bengal kicker Doug Pelfrey for his work with children through his Kicks for Kids program) and an appearance by Hollywood Celebrity and Cincinnati native, Carmen Electra!

Archbishop McNicholas High School junior Francisco Briceno Pineda has been selected to receive a 2007 YMCA of Greater Cincinnati Character Award. This award honors teens from throughout the community who the YMCA feels exemplify their four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
On November 1, 2007, the YMCA will honor 40 tri-state teens that demonstrate leadership and character traits in strengthening their homes, neighborhoods, and communities.
Francisco is a great example of young Latinos who are contributing to the community they live in, and we wish him all the very best!
Jorge Neri (President of LULAC Butler County) and Jason Riveiro (President of LULAC Cincinnati) received on Saturday, Sept. 29th, 2007, Awards from the NAACP Hamilton/West Chester chapter.
The Tri-State chapters of LULAC and NAACP are working closely together to promote education and diversity and fight racial profiling and discrimination. As former LULAC National President Hector Flores stated in 2002: "LULAC and NAACP share a similar vision of what America ought to be in the 21st Century with economic and social opportunities for every individual willing to reach out to the best of their ability to achieve their hopes, dreams, and aspirations."

Latinos are the fastest growing population group in the United States but comprise only 3 percent of the nation’s scientists and engineers. That’s according to the National Center for Education Statistics and it is not good news, given a growing need for U.S. engineering and other math and science expertise and innovation in the increasingly competitive global marketplace.
To address the need for more Hispanics in engineering, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is endorsing the new book ¡Ay Mijo! Why Do You Want To Be An Engineer? as a way to get the word out to young people about the benefits of pursuing a career in the field. You can buy the book from Amazon (click here...)
Ay Mijo (which means “my son” in Spanish) tells the stories of 12 Hispanic men who overcame challenges to become successful engineers today. One of these 12 featured engineers is Miguel Alemany from P&G.
Cincinnati will be a proud host of the 2010 National Conference of SHPE, thanks to Miguel who was the driving force behind the effort to bring the SHPE Conference to our city, the same way as he helped in bringing the 2006 NSHMBA National Conference to Cincinnati.
We would like to congratulate Miguel on this recognition, and thank him for all the support he provides to SHPE and NSHMBA!!!!
As the source for quality Hispanic engineers and technical talent, SHPE is helping promote Ay Mijo to increase awareness among Hispanic students about the opportunities found in engineering and the scholarships and other resources available to them. A portion of proceeds from the sale of Ay Mijo will benefit the scholarship program of the Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math and Science (AHETEMS) Foundation of SHPE.
“Many studies have shown what we at SHPE see all too often: not enough Hispanic men are excelling in or graduating from high school or applying to college,” said Manuel Hernandez, vice president of SHPE’s national board of directors, chairman of AHETEMS and one of the engineers profiled in Ay Mijo. “By participating in the release of Ay Mijo, we can introduce young men to role models who have realized their dreams through an education and career in engineering. The true stories of our own people can be the very best motivation toward success and personal satisfaction in life, and I’m honored that my own story is in this book,” Hernandez said.
