Members of Robotics Clubs sponsored by SHPE Cincinnati participated last Saturday in a regional Robotics competition at Ross Middle School in Hamilton, OH.
Since they competed for the very first time, there was a lot of anxiety! But they did an awesome job:
Hopewell Jr. High Team: Overall Champion
AMIS Panthuars Team: Most Promising Team Award
AMIS FBI Team: Best Core Values Award
In the Robot competitions, our teams placed 3rd, 4th, and 6th - out of 12 teams.
Thanks go to all the coaches, the schools teachers, the parents, and our sponsors (YMCA, GE, P&G, Ethicon) for helping in making this happen!
And congratulations to all the kids participating!
A child must be able toexpress how he or shefeels with freedomand safety.
Allowing a child to paint, sculpt, play-dance, and imagine with freedom, and without boundaries, opens their mind and frees their spirit!
Classes begin May 31st!* for 3 to 5 years *
In either English or Spanish, children discover the joys of music, art, movement, and theater, all of whichprovide a healthy outletfor many of the strong emotions thatchildren experience!
SHPE Cincinnati held on March 11th, 2011, a "Career Awareness" seminar for Hispanic 7th and 8th graders at Lakota Hopewell Junior High. The goal was to introduce students to fields in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
It is one of SHPE Cincinnati's initiatives to identify and sponsor a group of kids through iSPACE FIRST Lego League (Robotics Clubs). We want to excite the kids and make them aware of the opportunities out there. It was a great experience for SHPE members to interact with young thriving kids who have lot's of questions on college and STEM fields.
We would like to thank Ms. Sharon Young from iSPACE, all SHPE Volunteers, and the staff of Lakota Hopewell Junior High for support and participation.

Every October we observe Domestic Violence Awareness month but we have to be diligent in our efforts to speak out against violence every day. According to the US Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, nationally, in 2004, 1159 females and 385 males were murdered by intimate partners; and children were residents of the households experiencing intimate partner violence in 43% of incidents involving female victims. In Ohio, according to the Ohio Domestic Violence Network there were 345 fatalities by intimate partners in 2006. But the cycle can be broken by empowering yourself with knowledge.
At the YWCA we have several best practice and evidenced based programs that work with adults and adolescents who engage in or at risk for violent behaviors. However, many people are not aware that we also offer an Amend Adult group for Spanish speakers. This program is designed to address the effects of domestic violence and violent behavior through prevention/intervention services that target adult males who engage in violent, abusive and unruly behavior. The mission is to help individuals take responsibility for their actions; to examine and confront the values, beliefs, and attitudes that contribute to violence; and to develop non-violent alternatives for dealing with conflict and managing anger to prevent and reduce violence in the community.
The Amend Adult program is modeled after the Emerge curriculum which outlines best practices for responding to domestic violence both inside and outside of the legal system as well as providing guidelines for Batterer's Intervention Standards. The program began in 1982 and has provided batterers intervention services to court-ordered and self-referred domestic violence offenders in our community for over twenty-five years.
Please continue to use your voice to speak out against violence, empower others with knowledge, and do your part to provide others with the help they need. If you are interested in referring a client to our Amend Adult group for Spanish speakers please contact the group facilitator, Dr. Roberto Madrigal, at (513)361-2187 ext 213. All clients need to be assessed prior to starting a group.
The Amend Adult group for Spanish Speakers resumes on Thursday 4/15/10 at 6 PM.

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities Student SHPE Chapter and the Twin Cities Professional SHPE Chapter are proud to host the SHPE Region 6 Regional Leadership Development Conference (RLDC) for 2010. The conference will be held at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus in Minneapolis, Minnesota April 22-25.
This conference will offer students the opportunity to learn what it takes to be real leaders, while at the same time working on group projects that will give them the experience they need to see what true Leadership entails.
The theme of this conference is 5-fold:
Shape the future
Make things happen
Engage today’s talent
Build the next generation
Invest in yourself
Students will learn about each of these themes of leadership in detail by participating in workshops delivered by industry-leading speakers. The workshop topics will scratch past the surface of typical leadership descriptions into a deeper understanding on how these themes represent good leadership. The students will have the opportunity to put into action the lessons they have learned at the RLDC into a group project. Students can expect to leave the conference with an action plan of how to implement the experiences and leadership knowledge gained to their home SHPE chapters after the RLDC.

CINCINNATI (March 1, 2010) – On Monday, March 1st, the Academy of Multilingual Immersion Studies launched their first ever kick-off of a partnership with the Greater Cincinnati Nutrition Council and the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon. The AMISYoung Readers’ group, which meets weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays, will be participating in the Cincinnati Flying Pig Kids’ Marathon, or Cochinito Volador.
The Kids’ Marathon allows youngsters to finish the 26.2 miles of a marathon in incremental steps, a half mile or mile at a time during the school year. The final mile of the ‘course’ will be run on the actual Marathon course on Saturday, May 1, during Flying Pig Marathon weekend. Maria Lang, Program Facilitator at AMIS, is coordinating these efforts with help from Maya Shahani, the school nurse at AMIS.
During the school year, youngsters mark their distances on the Kids Marathon “Hog Log” which is available in the Kids Marathon section of the Flying Pig Marathon website, www.flyingpigmarathon.com. This year the “Hog Log” and Flying Pig Kids Marathon registration materials have been translated into Spanish for the first time, and AMIS will be the first school to pilo these Spanish language materials for the Kids’ Marathon.

Hello to all avid and aspiring Salseros in the area (i.e. as far and wide an area as this e-mail reaches). Some of you already know that I am aiming to start a set of 6 week Salsa series at Step-n-Out Studio in Covington, KY. The classes focus strickly on Social Salsa (as opposed to performance) techniques. I start teaching on Friday, Jan 22. Below are some details on the classes I intend to offer. General prices are below the descriptions:
1) "Zero to Hero" Social Salsa Series (Part 1): Friday’s (7 – 8 pm)
This is a six week group class specially designed for either absolute beginners as well as those of you who had some recent instruction but little experience (6 weeks - 12 months) in Salsa.
You know... the Salsa bug bit you hard and fast, you got the basics down pat, and you are starting to master the rhythm. You are totally addicted but... you are dying to get sharp and look good on the dance floor fast! You want to take the fist strong steps be a smooth lead or a sharp follower. The class starts from the very basics and covers all fundamental techniques that you should know in order to truly stand out on the dance floor. Leaders will not only learn to lead smoothly, clearly and on time. They will also learn the key to creating and improvise multiple patterns (yes, even at the beginner level). Followers will learn proper timing, footwork, preparation and execution techniques to recognize and follow the most common styles of salsa. Basic Styling techniques will be introduced as well so both male and female can learn to make their movement more gracious and visually attractive on the dance floor without interfering with partner-work!
Part 2 of this series is scheduled to begin in Mar and will pick up where part 1 leaves in order to develop you into a fully proficient salsa dancer up to an intermediate level.
This is tailored for dancers who feel clearly at home with the basics footwork, combinations and the rhythm of salsa and are now capable of learning/executing increasingly complex salsa patterns comfortably. After hard and fast review of the fundamentals on the first two weeks, the class will introduced new patterns every week with the purpose to introduced/work/master specific skills!
If you have taken lessons and/or have been dancing for more than a year but are somehow frustrated with your progress this class is for you. If you are wondering what the secret is to create, lead/follow complex (or improvised) patterns at higher levels with ease you will be in the right place. If you want to be the follower every Lead seeks to dance with first, you really need to be here!
