Boston Salsa – Field Trip in July 07

2007/08/17

In July 2007, MidwestLatino representative Kim Rioux traveled to Boston to visit friends, and to check out the Boston Salsa scene. Below are her experiences:

If you’re headed for Boston and looking for a place to Salsa, it seems there are many opportunities no matter what level of dancer you claim to be. I just spent a weekend in Boston, catching up with old college buddies who conveniently wanted to learn Salsa purely based on the clips they'd seen on Midwest Latino.

I did a little homework, locating the various venues through Salsapower.com and then used http://salsaboston.com/club_script/reviews/index.html to narrow it down.

We had a great experience at Mojitos, the chosen club to get them started, which was located in a very accessible and friendly area of Boston. The night life apparently gets going about 11pm and runs until 2am. Unfortunately, if you’re relying on public transit as we were, your options become very limited around 11:30. For that reason, I had only a brief period to gain my impressions.

In a nutshell, the personnel at Mojitos were a class act, from the affable door staff right down to the understated DJ, who seemed open to requests if you had them. My favorite was David, the manager, who gave us a personal tour and introduced us to the key players; Samuel, the bartender, makes a mean Mojito, and we sampled three different versions: classic, raspberry and watermelon. All fresh, (no mixes) and incredibly smooth. Roberto, an area instructor, led a 60 minute Salsa lesson, which included individual patterns ‘on-1’, then lead & follow techniques. He offered a good sense of humor, and gave everyone enough material to get started on the floor. From there, we had only 30 minutes before catching our train, and found that most of the early patrons came as beginning pairs, limiting my ability to dance as I know it at Havana Martini Club in Cincinnati. Still, I’d return to Mojitos with a partner. The atmosphere was friendly, the music eclectic, and the clientele diverse. No complaints for a single Saturday evening in Bean Town.
